GRINDELWALD, SWITZERLAND (April 8, 2015) - Switzerland's trains are much more than just a means of transport for hauling freight or commuters. They exist to make the mountains accessible. And there is no better way to gain easy access to some of the world’s most majestic mountains capes and glistening glacial expanses than on a train journey in the Swiss Alps.

Switzerland is now showcasing its scenic splendor on The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland, a network of national and private railways that puts the stunning panorama of Swiss alpine scenery right in front of you every day. It comprises the most eye-popping rail routes and breathtaking mountain excursions with options that can be enjoyed year round. The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland can be started and enjoyed from any point and there no prescribed direction or duration—all very flexible and relaxing.

Scenic Alps by Rail. To capture the best of Switzerland’s railway journeys, Alpenwild, an American tour company with over 30 years of experience in the Alps, leads guests on a 9-day rail tour of Switzerland appropriately named Scenic Alps by Rail.

Guests participate in an escorted small-group tour with First Class rail, deluxe hotels, and superb cuisine. This Grand Train Tour of Switzerland includes stays in favorite settings like Lugano, St. Moritz, Zermatt, Montreux and Interlaken. With an expert and personable guide at your side you’ll discover the history, culture, and engineering that have made Switzerland’s rail system the finest and most popular in the world. And the unforgettable Alps scenery is the icing on the cake.

Most of Switzerland’s legendary panoramic trains and mountain railways have carried passengers for over 100 years. Some are among the best-known and most widely-celebrated rail lines in the world, while others are remote and off the beaten path. All are timeless treasures waiting to be experienced.

Glacier Express. The world’s slowest express train is also the most famous. On its 7½-hour daily journey from St. Moritz to Zermatt it travels through glamorous resorts, charming valleys, 91 tunnels and across 291 bridges. The unmistakable red-and-white carriages snake their way through the Rhine Gorge and over the Oberalp Pass. Riding the Glacier Express is really about the journey and not the destination, so sit back and enjoy this romantic rail cruise through the Alps.

Bernina Express. If the Glacier Express is the most famous train in the world, the Bernina Express may claim the title of most scenic. The train has UNESCO World Heritage status for its stunning scenery like the Morteratsch Glacier, Schyn Gorge, and Brusio spiral viaduct. It seamlessly connects the cool north to the warm south with an extension that links passengers to the palm-lined shores of Lake Como and the Mediterranean climate of Lugano.

GoldenPass Line. On an east-west route from Lake Lucerne to Montreux on Lake Geneva, the GoldenPass Line climbs the Brunig Pass and skirts the lakes of both Brienz and Thun. But the most fascinating feature of the GoldenPass Line is its variety of innovative rolling stock—carriages with rotating seats and sprawling panoramic windows, classic Belle Époque coaches with luxurious velour furniture, and one modern locomotive with eight VIP seats placed over the engineer’s cabin to give you the feeling that you’re at the throttle.

Jungfrau Railway. When the Jungfrau Railway was completed in 1912 it was an engineering masterwork and embodied the ultimate achievement in railway construction. It’s still a spectacular excursion and an exceptional feat of engineering—the pinnacle of any trip to the Alps. Whether you start from Interlaken, Grindelwald, or Lauterbrunnen, the peak experience is arriving at Europe’s highest altitude railway station and overlooking the longest glacier in the Alps. At the top, don’t miss the Ice Palace, the Sphinx observation terrace or the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven.

Gornergrat Railway. Linking the mountain resort of Zermatt with the 10,285-ft summit of the Gorner Ridge, this cogwheel railway offers continually stunning views of the Matterhorn and then arrives at the ridgetop observatory where you’ll  overlook the Gorner Glacier (the second longest in the Alps) and be surrounded by more 4000-meter peaks than anywhere else in the Alps. It’s always a breathtaking setting.
