Bates Dance Festival features cutting edge contemporary performances in Lewiston, Maine, July 12-August 10

Taking place July 12-August 10 on the Bates College campus, the festival presents  premieres and masterworks by acclaimed choreographers and imaginative newcomers: Nejla Yatkin / NY2Dance; Doug Varone and Dancers; Bebe Miller Company; and Bridgman | Packer Dance.



Lewiston, Maine - In 2013 the Bates Dance Festival enters its fourth decade of presenting world-class contemporary dance featuring vibrant performances in the comfort of the newly air-conditioned Schaeffer Theatre. Taking place July 12-August 10 on the Bates College campus, the festival presents  premieres and masterworks by acclaimed choreographers and imaginative newcomers: Nejla Yatkin / NY2Dance; Doug Varone and Dancers; Bebe Miller Company; and Bridgman | Packer Dance. Opening the season, Nejla Yatkin / NY2Dance perform the world premiere of "Oasis." This evening-length multimedia work is based on the allegorical story of Layla and Majnoon, regarded as a Middle Eastern predecessor to "Romeo and Juliet." Performances take place Friday & Saturday, July 12 & 13.
 
One of America's most gifted dancemakers, Doug Varone brings his exceptional company, celebrating its 25th season, to perform the stunning new  "Mouths Above Water" and his signature work "Rise." Performances take place Thursday & Saturday, July 18 & 20.
               
Longtime BDF favorites, the Bebe Miller Company presents the performance installation "A History." The evening-length "A History" centers on the nuanced, decade-long dancing relationship between company veterans Angie Hauser and Darrell Jones. Performances take place Friday & Saturday, July 26 & 27.

 

 

 

Together for more than 30 years, Bridgman | Packer Dance has developed a unique approach to integrating video into dance. With "Voyeur," inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper, Art Bridgman and Myrna Packer invite audiences into this evocative world. Performances take place Friday & Saturday, Aug. 2 & 3.
               
Also featured this summer the annual "Musicians' Concert" is a global mix of music by 10 remarkable composers and players , July 31; "Different Voices" concerts showcase diverse dance styles and perspectives by visiting choreographers on Aug. 8 & 9; and the "Festival Finale" presents modern, hip hop and contemporary works by festival artists on Aug. 10.
