Pee Wee Ellis’ extraordinary story as a saxophonist, bandleader, composer and arranger spans six decades. He made his mark early during his time with the James Brown Revue in the 1960s, where he cowrote “Cold Sweat,” a tune widely credited as launching a new sound dubbed “funk.”

Fast-forward to Pee Wee’s latest release, “Tenoration” and it’s clear he continues to be an innovator. In between his work with James Brown and his current achievements, Pee Wee has enjoyed a varied and remarkable career. During the ’80s, Pee Wee served as musical director and arranger for Van Morrison. In the 1990s, he moved to Europe and pursued a burgeoning solo career, also forming the acclaimed JB Horns with ex-James Brown alumni Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley.

He later led the spectacular “Still Black, Still Proud,” an African Tribute to James Brown and was a founding member of drumming legend Ginger Baker’s Jazz Confusion.

Pee Wee is now focused on his own projects, including his band The Pee Wee Ellis Assembly; an autobiography and the heritage project FUNK: Evolution of a Revolution. Pee Wee’s summer concert tour this year celebrates his 75th birthday.

Billy Harper:
As a young saxophonist, Billy Harper’s career began took wing when he moved to New York and began attracting attention from some of jazzdom’s giants — Gil Evans, Max Roach, Thad Jones, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. He performed, recorded and toured the U.S., Europe, Japan and Africa from 1966 to 1979 with these groups.

A fantastic sideman, Billy was equally at ease fronting his own group and it wasn’t long before the Billy Harper Quintet began receiving notoriety. “Black Saint,” Billy’s 1976 release, exploded on the international jazz scene. The reviews all applauded his innovations and prompted the Modern Jazz League of Tokyo to name the album, “Jazz Record of the Year - Voice Grand Prix.”

Throughout his career, there has been a pattern of spiritual growth and innovation. Says Billy, “My feeling is that music should have a purpose. In the past, it always has been used for healing and uplifting and meditation. And that's the way I see my music. I've had people come up after a program to tell me that they felt a spiritual healing from the music. When that happens, then I feel we're fulfilling what we’re supposed to do.”

The Belleayre Music Festival’s Catskill Mountain Jazz Night promises to be an unforgettable performance by two jazz greats and their top-notch bands. Kicking off the evening at 6:30 p.m. on the WIOX Discovery Deck will be the Loren Daniels Ensemble. Enjoy a meal and a beverage while listening to Loren’s super playing.
