For Caruso to have all of her passions under one roof in her city and in her favorite theater was the beginning of  a new artistic chapter in her life and one in which she can continue annually as she brings some of the best company in the world to perform her work in Pittsburgh while showcasing her choreographic efforts abroad on her company and still having a reverence for Pittsburgh based artistic and community efforts.  The evening begins early at 7:30pm with a short ballet about the children of Lending Hearts, a local non-profit founded by Vasso Paliourus and focused on creating social engagement, support, and activities for children with cancer.  For this work, Caruso recruited eight amazing kids and young adults to tell their heroic stories on the stage.  Using Caruso’s trademarked research based chorographic approach and movement therapy system, the company seeks to showcase their heroism with a powerful display dance accompanied by the children themselves.  This marks Caruso’s first attempt to integrate her participants fully in the performance space.  And, knowing that some audience members find challenge with such subject matter within the arts setting, she created space for such attendees to join the concert after the intermission at 8pm for which time the cast of Lending Hearts Children will take the front row seats to watch their mentors take the stage for the remainder of the concert.

Next on the docket is contemporary pointe work titled Bonsoir that was created as an opening piece for a children’s concert and sought to simple invite the audience into the dance space through the smooth jazz of St. Germain, fancy footwork and strong classical ballet technique, and colorful turquoise and hot pink costumes.  A piece certainly worthy of getting the audience excited for more.  Follow this work will be the recreation one of Caruso’s most acclaimed works, Intimate Liaisons, yet to be seen in a mainstage production.  Focused on the departing of a sister, the work will have its run with two retired Bodiography artists and guests, Kelly Basil and Kirstie Corso.  Here Caruso sought to deepen the work’s emotional prowess by restaging with two incredibly mature and versatile dancers.

Moving forward from there the full company presents Led by Light, created for SWAN Day in 2013 at the New Hazlett Theater.  A work about following this light and energy of women around us who empower us is evident in this contemporary work.  Following this piece, we open the stage to one of Caruso’s more recent commission for Warped Dance Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  A company for which she will be performing solo work for in early January, she is thrilled to be presenting the company in Pittsburgh as the present Curious Spirals, a work examining the creativity of a child following a weeklong retreat with Suflita Skrabalak’s son Hayes.  Under the direction of Maria Hackbarth, the company’s global reputation is one that is welcome here on the Bodiogrjaphy stage.  Then, Misa Pascarella takes the stage with Jayson Douglas for a new pas de duex set to an original piano composition performed by Theo Teris.  A composer for whom Ms. Caruso has enjoyed many collaborative successes over
the past season, she is delighted to be commissioning a new work as well as welcoming a new guest danseur to the stage with one of her senior company artists.

Finally, the evening closes with the Pittsburgh premiere of Within the Confines, Caruso’s 2015 commission by the Charlotte Dance Festival.  The acclaimed work focuses on the many ways in which we view personal emotionald and physical confinement and how we seek to break free from of such barriers in our life.  Originally set on seven professional artists from numerous companies in North Carolina, one being Lauren Suflita Skrabalak, its performance in Pittsburgh is of great excitement.  Re-staged by Suflita Skrabalak herself and choreographically refined by Caruso, it is the most exciting way to end such an eclectic and invigorating concert.

Following Ms. Caruso’s retirement from the Bodiography stage in February of 2015, she embarked on a new creative journey with massive international appeal.  Managing five new choreographic commissions in the United States and numerous master workshops and solo performances across the globe, she began to recognize how critical it was to not loose sight of the company that she loved so dearly and its regional impact.  Thus, the idea for a concert that consisted of a variety of works unseen to Bodiography’s mainstage audience would be a stellar way to begin 2016 and a wonderful opportunity to push the company off to its first southern tour in March as the company opens for the Charlotte Dance Festival.  The chance for Caruso to showcase her artistic zeal on one new medically related work in partnership with Lending hearts, the creation of a new work with an original composition and performance by pianist Theo Teris and guest performance by Jayson Douglas, a restaging of her 2015 Charlotte Dance Festival commission directed by alumna Lauren Suflita Skrabalak, the performance of three Pittsburgh festival creations unseen on the Byham stage, and a performance of her latest commission Curious Spirals performed by Milwaukee’s Warped Dance Company in the flesh and in the Burgh, seemed like a dream come true.
