It's the Ice Age Mammals in Florida!

With the Mastodon assembled, the By-Gone Beasts exhibit now has standing three of the large mammals of the ice age: the Mastodon, the Giant Ground Sloth, and the Saber Tooth Cat.

Cocoa, Florida (July 17, 2013) - The Brevard Museum is excited to announce the return of the articulated mastodon! With the Mastodon assembled, the By-Gone Beasts exhibit now has standing three of the large mammals of the ice age: the Mastodon, the Giant Ground Sloth, and the Saber Tooth Cat. Itís amazing that all three of these mammals were once native to Florida.

The Grand Unveiling of the Articulated Mastodon Event will be held on August 17th, 2013 at 6pm with a cost of $50. Cocoa Mayor Parrish III will be doing the honors of unveiling the Mastodon while John Jeremiah, donor of the Mastodon, will be announcing the Mastodonís community-chosen name.  Light refreshments will be served. RSVP required; contact the Museum for details.

The Brevard Museum Guild and Board of Trustees have enthusiastically supported the project with fundraisers and donations of both time and money. The Brevard County community has also fully supported the Mastodon Articulation project; not only by financial support but also by participating in choosing his name.  The community submitted over 100 names which were then narrowed to ten names. Those ten names: Wooley, Bones, Mason, Trunky, Dawn, Millie, Tusker, Humphrey, Miles, and Manny (in no particular order), were voted on by the community from December 1st through April 1st with one name a clear favorite!

The By-Gone Beasts Exhibit will open to the general public beginning August 22, 2013 during regular Museum hours. Tours of ten or more are available any time during the week with advance notice.
