Canton, Mississippi (September 3, 2013) - Football has the Super Bowl. Motorsports has the Indy 500. Movies have the Oscars. And when it comes to holiday shopping in the Southeast, the Canton Flea Market Arts & Crafts Show, held October 10th, 2013, is the one-day shopping event that combines the excitement, speed and sheer star power of all those other headliners combined.

For one day something magical happens to this small historic central Mississippi town: the cityscape is completely transformed, as more than 1,100 of the nation’s premiere artisans and craftsmen spread their wares in a strategically compatible arrangement that helps turn ordinary women into the super stars of power shopping.

Anyone overly impressed by running backs’ fancy footwork on the way to a yard line hasn’t seen the Flea Market’s holiday heroes make their beelines through throngs of thousands to locate favorite vendors before searching out new discoveries in pottery, jewelry, antiques and unique gifts of all kinds.  While the crowds here are massive, coming from every corner of the Southeast and beyond, the flow and friendliness of the Canton Flea Market keep shoppers light on their feet, plowing ahead to their gifting goals even after they are, inevitably, loaded down with purchases.

And speaking of speed and endurance, on the big day, despite ample parking, many of the women arrive with their engines revved and running by 5 a.m., three hours before opening.

“October is the favorite time of the year to come to the Canton Flea Market Arts and Craft show,” according to Angela Ladner. It is a great time of the year to start your Holiday shopping, you get items that you can’t buy at a retail store.  More than the purchases, however, for those like Angela who attend with friends, family or in groups, the event is a richly satisfying social ritual.

“The Canton Flea Market is a wonderful family tradition for my mother and I,” Angela says. “We just know we are going to have a girls date every May and October. It’s the perfect kickoff to the holiday season.”

Products, and praise, from everywhere: A bi-annual event held the second Thursday of May and October, the Canton Flea Market began simply enough in 1965 when local artists decided to display their works by hanging them on the wrought iron fence surrounding the Madison County Courthouse, the gracious Greek Revival structure that anchors Canton’s historic downtown. From there, the Market grew in scope even as momentum accelerated.

“Today, the Canton Flea Market is the kind of place where you’ll find birdhouses by an Illinois artisan in one booth and homemade Louisiana hot sauce in another,” says Jana Padgett, Event Coordinator for the Canton Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, who notes that vendors this year are coming from 35 different states to showcase their artwork and products in what has become one of the South’s largest crafts fairs as well as a headline tourism experience. Named a "Top Twenty Event in the Southeast" by the Southeast Tourism Society, the Flea Market has also been heralded as the "Outstanding Promotional Event in the State of Mississippi" by the Mississippi Downtown Development Association; "Best of the Best of Mississippi" by Mississippi Magazine; and a "Top 100 Event" by the American Bus Association.

The Canton Flea Market is a marketplace without parallel, where diversity is matched by quality in an array of products ranging from fine art offered below gallery prices to antiques and hand-crafted arts to floral gifts and live plants. Shoppers will also enjoy perusing Canton’s Antique and Gift Square of Mississippi. Select food products have pride of place as well, from hot sauce to locally grown honey offered by a beekeeper who has also branched out into a full line of bee products like hand-softening bee crèmes that Southern women swear by.

Naturally, in a town known for its hospitality, there are also ample choices in restaurants, cafes and dining options for enjoyable pit stops fueled by superb local cuisine and great conversation.

And if the Canton Flea Market is a leading attraction for shoppers, for vendors it’s a must-stop event on their exhibition calendars. “There’s no place like the Canton Flea Market,” says Renee Guest Vendor, with Baby Face designs. “Visitor’s come from all over, they come by the bus loads and are ready to shop! We have shoppers  every year come back and need to order more items like the ones they bought last year.”

Hollywood magic in a movie-star town: With its charming town square and historic architecture, Canton has served as the backdrop for iconic Hollywood films including “A Time to Kill,” “My Dog Skip” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou.”  And setting the scene for the Canton Flea Market requires a near magical and Hollywood-worthy feat of logistics. On Tuesday, the town is quiet and completely normal. Wednesday, the tents arrive. Thursday—Showtime! But by Friday morning, after city crews work through the night on cleanup, all traces of the Flea Market have vanished.

That’s when visitors and tour groups can enjoy Canton’s more quietly winning ways. Only 30 minutes from Mississippi’s state capital of Jackson, Canton is an excellent post-Flea Market choice for relaxation and rejuvenation, with a little spa conditioning thrown in—lifting and storing all those packages is great way to get toned up for the holidays.

So holiday heroes, start your engines. The legendary holiday shopping of the Canton Flea Market Arts & Crafts Show opens at 8 a.m. October 10, 2013, and closes at 5 p.m. on the same day.
