Children's Dances are staged by Patricia Cantwell and feature the spectacular sets designed by Backdrops Fantastic, and intricate and whimsical costumes by Don Cantwell, Claudia Folts and Travis Halsey. Highlights of this seasonís production will be the new Chinese & Little Bo Peep and her Lambs (Mirlitons) Divertissements featuring the talented dancers of the Charleston Ballet Theatre Center for Dance Education Young Artists Company.

Featuring the famed Tchaikovskyís score, this yearís production boasts a seasoned cast with Sarah Hairston, Zack Grubbs, Jacqueline Damico, Taylor Carrasco, of Cincinnati Ballet,   Arthur Leeth as Drosselmeyer  the roles of Cavalier and Sugar Plum Fairy, Alexey Kulpin, in the role of Russian Trepak, Jacqueline Damico &  Taylor Carrasco in the roles of Snow King and Snow Queen, and Michael Rodriguez & Katie Badgett in the roles of Arabian Prince and Princess.

The Nutcracker, a classical ballet in two acts based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, follows the enchanting journey of young Maria, who receives a Nutcracker as a gift at a Christmas Eve party. Her nutcracker is ultimately transformed into a handsome young prince, who leads her through an enchanted forest and on to the Palace of Sweets, where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy. Among the balletís most famous and memorable moments are a battle between toy soldiers and overgrown mice, a Christmas tree that grows to huge heights, the pas de deux of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, and a shimmering snow scene.

The 60 children's roles in Nutcracker are performed by rotating casts of Charleston Ballet Theatre School as well as other dance students from other schools throughout the Lowcountry that auditioned through an open audition last September. Rehearsals have been ongoing since that audition.

Charleston Ballet Theatre Center for Dance Education and Coastal Ballet USA are proud to announce a collaboration to form a new training center geared exclusively toward the pre-professional dancer age 12-23.   The Training Center will select 15-24 dancers through national auditions to attend a two year program to train, learn repertory and prepare for a future career with a professional organization. The business plan includes an academic school component so that dancers can receive their high school education requirement. One of the central defining themes of the training center will be the influx of well know ballet professionals to teach this selected group. Already, Robert Barnett, Anne Marie Holmes, Bruce Marks, Barry Leon, Radenko Pavlovich and Wes Chapman, have agreed to teach in the inaugural year.  These chosen dancers will perform in productions throughout the school year and we will perform in coastal communities Charleston, Hilton Head and Jacksonville.

After providing professional ballet to the Lowcountry for over 25 years, the Ballet's leadership is excited and looking forward to expanding across the state regionally. Under the direction of Don and Patricia Cantwell, Artistic Directors, and Resident Choreographer Jill Eathorne-Bahr, is now celebrating its 28th season of presenting dance in Charleston. The directors have a long tradition of offering professional ballet and dance works of the highest quality to the local, regional, and national scene.
