Founded in 1959 in Atlanta, GA, by brothers Joe and Charles Pope, the Tams would play local taverns and nightclubs for $1.25. The pay was enough to purchase matching Tam O’Shanter hats, which earned them the moniker the Tams, a name that today is known all over the world.

They had their first Billboard hit on Arlen Records with “Untie Me” in 1962 on Arlen Records, which reached #12 on the R&B charts. In 1963 they signed with ABC Records. Their first album, Presenting the Tams, produced a number one record, “What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am?)” This propelled the Tams into professional status and national popularity. A string of hits followed, including “You Lied To Your Daddy,” “Hey Girl,” “I’ve Been Hurt,” “It’s Better To Have Loved A Little,” and “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy.”

It was 1976, as the vocal group continued to tour and find new fans, that Charles’ son Li’l Redd joined the Tams. Every weekend he was on the road with his dad and Uncle Joe and Otis Pope. As soon as the family found him a tutor, he was on the road with the Tams full time.

After Joe Pope passed away in 1996, Charles and Redd took over leadership of the group. In 1999, the Tams were featured on Jimmy Buffitt’s CD, Beach House on the Moon, and also toured nationally with him.

In 2009, when Charles became ill with Alzheimer’s Disease, Redd was named lead singer for the Joe Pope Tams. He has played and performed with the greats, including James Brown, the Temptations, Four Tops, Dionne Warwick, the Drifters, the Platters, Chairmen of the Board, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Little Richard, Chubby Checker and more.

The Tams have been honored with induction in the Carolina Beach Music Academy Hall of Fame as well as the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

Also performing at the July 31st event is the high-energy Summerdaze Band. With eight dynamic vocalists, including a three-piece horn section, this sought-after dance band is known for keeping the dance floor full.

Award winning deejay Butch Halpin from Dunn, NC will serve as emcee. Juan “Big John” Gualda from Fort Pierce, FL will join Halpin as deejay for the event.
