Chestnut Square Historical Village Offering Prairie Adventure Camps, McKinney, TX

McKinney, Texas, June 16, 2014 (McKenzieNewsService.com) - At Chestnut Square Historical Village this summer, children have the opportunity to “time travel” back to an era before the Information Age and experience the summers of yesterday. Prairie Adventure Camps are offered on the following dates: June 17-19, 24 - 26, July 8 - 10, 22 - 24, 29 - 31, August 5 - 7, at 315 S. Chestnut Street, McKinney, TX.

Each day’s camp begins with “de-modernizing.” Children will be able to dress in historically-themed clothing to help them embrace their trip back in time. The camp sessions focus on different types of textile arts, home skills, and old-fashioned games. Kids will be able to experience activities such as marbles, jacks, dominoes, and square-dancing, as well as pie-making, soap-making, home-made ice cream, quilting, weaving, and other old-time hobbies. “It’s not only a great summer day camp, but a unique way to give your child a new perspective,” says Jamie Spence, Director of Programs.

Sessions are appropriate for boys and girls age 6 to 13 years. All camps are 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Cost: $100 (Junior Membership to Chestnut Square Historic Village is included with registration) or $90 for existing members.

Campers age 9 years to 13 years can add an afternoon session of old-fashioned crafts to continue their time-traveling adventure.  Children can enjoy a specialty class instructed by artists from the McKinney community.  At the end of the camp, campers can take home a completed project. Camps are limited to 15.  Cost: $50 if enrolled in the morning PAC. If purchased as an afternoon camp only, the cost is $100 ($90 for current members.). Junior Membership to Chestnut Square Historic Village is included with registration.  Camps are 1:00-4:00 p.m. for ages 9-13.   All materials are provided. Quaint Crafts Camps will be offered on the following dates only: June 17-19 (Jewelry), June 24-26 (Painting), and July 8 - 10 (Cooking).

Chestnut Square Historic Village is a collection of six historic homes, a replica of a one-room school house, chapel and store on 2.5 acres just south of the downtown McKinney square.  The grounds also include a blacksmith shop, smoke house, and beautiful chapel and reception gardens.  The buildings include period artifacts showing how people lived in Collin County from 1854-1920.
