Historical Society Costume Exhibit at Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society, Port Washington, NY

 

 

Selections from the Society’s collection include a century of wedding dresses dating from 1874 to 1974. Also featured are three historic men’s wedding outfits, marriage licenses, wonderful hats, vintage purses, parasols, corsets, lingerie, and a 2015 Brooks Brothers’ seersucker tuxedo.

 

Port Washington, New York, October 29, 2015 - The Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society of Port Washington launches its major exhibit, “Costume & Culture,” that runs through February 6, 2016. Docent led tours are every Saturday at 12:30pm.  Made possible through the generous sponsorship of Brooks Brothers, the exhibit features historic garments presented in context with their heritage and history. Showcasing more than 65 garments plus countless accessories, displayed throughout the historic Sands-Willets House.
 
Selections from the Society’s collection include a century of wedding dresses dating from 1874 to 1974. Also featured are three historic men’s wedding outfits, marriage licenses, wonderful hats, vintage purses, parasols, corsets, lingerie, and a 2015 Brooks Brothers’ seersucker tuxedo.
 
Brooks Brothers garments include Abraham Lincoln’s Great Coat (replica made for the Ford’s Theater museum), John Philip Sousa’s Parade Coat, and a beautiful NYS Cavalry uniform. Two Brooks Brothers costumes from the 2013 movie, The Great Gatsby (starring Leonardo DiCaprio) will be on display in the 1920s Room along with numerous dresses from that decade.
 
The Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society is located at Sands-Willets House, 336 Port Washington Blvd., Port Washington, NY 11050.

 

Docent-led informational tours and an open exhibit will run every Saturday through February 2016. Group tours are available by appointment.

 

Admission: $15 Adults, $12 Senior and kids 12 & under. Tickets are sold online and at the door, though group size is limited to 15 per tour.  The historic building is not wheel-chair accessible.
