Gatlin Brothers Headline Music Festival in Mount Vernon, Ohio, August 7 to 10

 

The widely recognized Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers will step onto the stage at 9:30 pm on August 9th to entertain young and old alike.

Mount Vernon, Ohio, July 31, 2014 (McKenzieNewsService.com) - The 2014 Dan Emmett Music & Arts Festival will be held in the streets of downtown Mount Vernon, OH, on August 7th – 10th, marking the 27th year for the event. The Festival’s mission is to “Celebrate the Legacy” of Dan Emmett. This homegrown musician, composer and founder of minstrelsy tradition is known world-wide as the author of “Dixie.” Dan Emmett’s life and career is honored through a varied format of performing and creative artists on four stages and all along South Main Street for the enjoyment of Festival goers of all ages.

The Festival will open on Thursday with the four-day Crafts & Trades Show with local merchants, vendors, crafters, and artisans displaying their wares. Senior citizens are invited to spend “A Day on the Square” with special entertainment beginning at lunchtime with the Youth Showcase taking to the South Stage and various local youth performing on the Square. The afternoon will be filled with continuous activities and music for honored seniors. A variety of historical figures will come to life in the evening with a Chautauqua series held at ThePlace@TheWoodward. The annual Cheer Competition will take place on South Main Street at 6 pm, followed by the preliminary round for the Knox Idol competition  at 8 pm.  Dance to the Oldies with the Kokosing River Surf Club at 6:30 pm on the First-Knox Main Stage, followed by Phil Dirt and the Dozers at 8:30 pm. These rock ‘n’ rollers of all time will rock the first night of the Festival to a riveting end. 

On Friday, some of the most talented youth of Knox County will take the stage to compete in the Finals for the title of Knox Idol. The 2014 title award will be presented for the audience’s choice.  Following the Knox Idol finals on Friday, the 2014 Ohio Idol contestants will take the stage to see who will win the $10,000 prize.  On the South Stage, an Elvis impersonator will entertain young and old at 7:30 pm.

The three day Fine Arts & Handcraft Fair opens Friday featuring well-known artisans, selected by a jury of their peers to assure the quality and originality of the arts' products.  The Woodward Opera House will be open for tours Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Saturday will be another fun-filled day in Downtown Mount Vernon featuring performers from Knox County and the surrounding area. The ever-popular Fiddle, Banjo, and Flat-Pick Guitar Contests will bring burgeoning musicians from all over the state. Many local singers and musicians will share their vocal and musical talent with the crowd throughout the afternoon. 

The evening’s entertainment kicks off with the up and coming Willis Clan on the Main Stage, followed by the Festival Bell Auction. The 2014 Festival Bells honors the 25th anniversary of Mount Vernon in Nazarene University’s stunning R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. The widely recognized Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers will step onto the stage at 9:30 pm to entertain young and old alike.

On “Gospel Sunday,” the First-Knox South Stage will feature the best in praise and pure gospel music.  WNZR’s Family Fun Zone at ThePlace@TheWoodward.

The Motorcycle Show and Cruise In will also be held on Sunday. The registration is from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm, with an awards presentation at 3:00 pm. The Caffiends will play throughout the show.  And the cars will line the streets to participate in the Antique and Classic Car Show. The awards presentation for the favorites begins at 4:00 pm.

Admission to Festival is free. Free Parking on the streets, in lots, and in the surrounding neighborhood streets. All music concerts are free, except: Gatlin concert is free, with limited up front sponsor and Friend of the Festival seating for $20 per seat.
