151 Years of Scottish Game & Heritage Returns to Pleasanton, CA, September 3 & 4

 

Featuring more than 30 pipe bands from the U.S. and Canada, plus the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, to the 42nd U.S. Invitational Heavy Event Championship with professional and amateur athletes, and the Western U.S. Open Highland Dancing Championships, the Pleasanton Games provides it all.

 

Pleasanton, California, August 25, 2016 - Celebrating 151 years of continuous Scottish Games, the Caledonian Club of San Francisco provides one of the world's largest Scottish Gathering & Games with 22 different events and attractions. The Games take place at the enormous Alameda County Fairgrounds In Pleasanton, California on September 3-4, 2016. www.TheScottishGames.com


Featuring more than 30 pipe bands from the U.S. and Canada, plus the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, to the 42nd U.S. Invitational Heavy Event Championship with professional and amateur athletes, and the Western U.S. Open Highland Dancing Championships, the Pleasanton Games provides it all.


Add to that four stages of traditional and Celtic Rock entertainment, two stages of Scottish fiddlers, harpers, dancers and singing. Among the favorites is the Living History area with Mary Queen of Scots and her entourage, the Highland Warriors, and the invading Roman Legion and fierce Vikings. The Glen of the Clans provides historic information with nearly 100 clans represented. Add to that the Irish Pavilion, Sheep Dog Trials, Children's Glen, Birds of Prey, Semi-Pro Five-A-Side Soccer Tournament, Kilted Mile, Rugby and Shinty Tournaments, Highland Cattle, Clydesdale Team, Archery participation and an array of British motor cars and you have a days worth of entertainment. There will be more than 100 vendors in five buildings, British food and drink and the popular Whisky Tasting Pavilion.

 

Two glorious days of fun and entertainment for the whole family from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. All ethnic groups will find much to enjoy at the 151st Gathering & Games!

OPENING CEREMONIES: (Held in front of the main grandstands beginning at 12:00-noon both days)
 
GRANDSTAND SHOW: Featuring 30-plus pipe bands from the U.S. and Canada plus 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band Miramar in concert with the famed L.A. Scots Pipe Band (Held in front of the main grandstands beginning at 5:20 p.m. both days). Plus: Massed Pipe Bands (30+)  in concert. Western States Drum Major Finals, and more!
 
PIPE BANDS: Competition: Thirty-plus Pipe Bands from the U.S. and Canada in competition. Individual Piper and Drummer competition. Grades 1-5. (Also perform in the Grandstand Show both days).
 
HEAVY EVENTS (ATHLETICS):  42nd U.S. Invitational Heavy Event Championships (Pro and Amateur Men and Women). World’s top professional heavy event athletes including World Champion Matt Vincent.  Top selected amateur men’s and women’s divisions and men’s and women’s Masters Classes. All athletes compete in all eight disciplines, including Caber, Weight-for-Height, Weight-for-Distance, Hammer, and Stone Putt.
 
HIGHLAND DANCING: Western U.S. Highland Dancing Championships.
 
IRISH PAVILION:  Irish Step Dancing demonstrations and more, Saturday and Sunday.
 
ENTERTAINMENT: Five stages of traditional and Celtic Rock bands, groups and individuals.  Albannach (Scotland), Skerryvore (Scotland), Steve McDonald (New Zealand), The Angry Brians, Fire, Browne Sisters, Golden Bough, Michael Mullen, Peter Daldry, and Neil O’Neil.
 
CELTIC HERITAGE: Two stages of continuous Fiddling, Harping, Singing and Scottish Country Dancing featuring the Scottish Fiddlers Rally with Alasdair Fraser & Celtic Harpers with Varlene Schermer.
 
LIVING HISTORY: Reenactment guilds with Mary Queen of Scots and her entourage; Highland Warriors, Roman Legions and invading Vikings. Period artisans and craftsmen.
 
GATHERING OF THE CLANS: Do you have a bit of Scottish blood in your veins. This is the place to research your heritage. Nearly 100 clan tents.
 
FOR THE YOUNGSTERS: Children’s Glen with games and prizes. (One of many attractions the kids love)
 
BIRDS OF PREY: A crowd favorite - more than 20 exotic birds, including hawks, falcons, owls and more, with professional handlers and informative information.
 
SHEEP DOG TRIALS: Demonstrations in the precise herding of sheep by highly trained dogs and their handlers. Provided by the Northern California Working Sheepdog Association.
 
CLYDESDALE HORSE TEAM: Always a popular feature for the children.
 
HIGHLAND CATTLE: With long coats of hair, these magnificent “coos” are prepared for the cold Scottish winter!
 
SOCCER AND MORE: The quick game of Five-A-Side soccer with eight Semi-Pro teams from California and
Nevada.
 
RUGBY & SHINTY: Local Rugby teams. See the ancient Scottish game of Shinty, played by local teams.
 
VENDORS: Five buildings with more than 100 vendors with wares and services from the British Isles - Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.
 
FOOD & BEVERAGE: Enjoy a steak pie, fish & chips, British banger, corned beef & cabbage, or Scotch Egg! - Ales or beer....and of course regular fairgrounds American style food.
 
BRITISH MOTOR CAR CAVALCADE: A number of British marque clubs display their cherished automobiles....how about a three-wheeled Morgan!
 
KILTED MILE: Competition for all ages, running the one-mile track for prizes and glory. Both days beginning at 10:00 a.m. Kilt required!
 
WHISKY TASTING: Sample premium Scottish, American & International whikies. Attend a Master Class seminar with a Whisky Master. (Additional cost).
 
FRIDAY NIGHT CONCERT: Held at the host hotel, Marriott San Ramon. Marine Band and Celtic entertainment. Open to the public for $14.00.
