27th annual Flurry Festival Features Traditional Music and Dance, Saratoga Springs, NY

 

 

Saratoga Springs, New York (January 14, 2014) - Shake off the winter blues! It’s time to dance, sing, jam, and more at the 27th Flurry Festival, President’s Weekend, February 14th to the 16th in Historic Saratoga Springs, NY.  Festival headquarters are found filling the Saratoga Springs City Center and Saratoga Hilton Hotel, with more performances and workshops scheduled at Saratoga Music Hall, Café Lena, and The Parting Glass Pub.  The Flurry is well known as the winter weekend for Dancers and Music Lovers of all ages, featuring more than 400 performers, five venues, and over 250 events.
 
Events this year will include a huge lineup of programs for families with young children, many new and exciting programs for teens,  with international music and dance events, non-stop swing and contra dancing, jamming and music instruction, storytelling, and more.
 
Young children will be busy with easy family dances, traditional square dancing, international family dancing, a kids jug band jam, community barn dances, improvisational modern dance, funny songs and sing-alongs, story telling and much more.
 
Teens will have their very own “21 and under” contra dance, improvisational modern dance class, a teen talent showcase, teen jam session, World dance for teens, Sing-along Songs from Summer Camp,  Spanish style hip-hop dancing, Techno Contra,  and many more activities specially lined up for teens and young adults.


 
Festival goers of all ages will enjoy a major lineup of international music and dance experiences, featuring events like an African Jive Dancapalooza, Cajun dance parties, Regional Greek Folk dances, Irish singing, Yodeling, Yiddish square dancing, Scandinavian Dance party, Zwiefacher,  as well as many more international dance, music, and singing sessions.
 
Other participatory dance events include English Country Dancing, Appalachian Square Dancing, Waltzing, Country Two Step, Disco, Hip Hop, Yiddish Dancing, Reggae, Ska, and Rock Steady, The Cakewalk, and more.
 
 
Traditional Flurry Festival activities such as non-stop contra and swing dancing will go all weekend long, including a Lindy Boot Camp, and a Lindy Bomb Ball later the same day, Contra dancing for all levels of ability, Waltzes, Squares, and even romantic couple dances featured on Friday for Valentines Day. This year will also feature two Techno Contra dance parties, one late at night, and one during the day.
 

 

 

 

Not a dancer? There is more than enough to keep you busy with jamming, music instruction workshops, concerts, storytelling, demonstrations and special dance performances to watch. The weekend will bring you more than 20 live concerts from African American Gospel and Freedom songs with Kim and Reggie Harris, to Vintage Blues with Annie & the Hedonists, Flamenco Music and Dance with Tania Asili, and so much more. Plus over 30 music instruction workshops with everything from Beginning Harmonica to Body Percussion, Hillbilly Blues Banjo playing, Steel Pan Drum, and more.  Plus 20 singing sessions including songs from the Underground Railroad, Sea Chanteys and Drinking Songs, Round singing, and much more. All that plus organized and spontaneous jamming all weekend. 
 
Vendors will be on hand with beautiful and fun dance wear, including dance shoes, and a variety of food options will be available, including options for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free attendees.
