Reveal the Secrets of an Ancient Tomb at the Mercer Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania

Doylestown, Pennsylvania (September 19, 2013) - The secrets of an ancient world await!  In the new exhibit, Mystery of the Mayan Medallion, young archaeologists are transported to the ancient city of Palenque, Mexico where they must follow the clues to locate a precious jade medallion that has been buried in the city’s ruins.  The exhibit will run from September 21 until January 12, 2014 at the Mercer Museum, located at Pine Street & Scout Way in Doylestown, PA.

Mystery of the Mayan Medallion invites families and school groups to learn more about the sophisticated Maya civilization at a series of field stations where they will translate glyphs, discover which rainforest animals are poisonous, learn the Mayan system for recording dates and take rubbings from a sarcophagus.  The exhibit is included with museum admission.

The Mercer Museum will hold a Mayan-themed Opening Day Celebration on Saturday September 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., which will feature Mesoamerican storytelling, mural painting and craft activities.  Other Mayan-themed events planned for the run of the exhibit and will include carving a Mayan glyph out of soap, making a Mayan headdress and necklace, and learning the importance of chocolate to the Maya and other ancient cultures.

Mystery of the Mayan Medallion is generously sponsored by:  Millham Insurance Agency, Brian and Louise McLeod, The Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia, The Mexican Cultural Center  and Cesar Viveros, Artist.

The Mystery of the Mayan Medallion has been developed by the Arkansas Discovery Network, a statewide museum partnership operated by the Museum of Discovery, Little Rock, Arkansas. The Arkansas Discovery Network was established through a grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
