Mount Gretna Outdoor Art Show to Feature 260 Exhibitors from USA & Canada, Mount Gretna, PA

 

The Mt. Gretna Art Show features fine artists and craftsmen from throughout the United States and Canada. This year’s show will feature 260 exhibitors, selected from nearly 500 applicants, as well as an “Emerging Artists” area for talented artists who have not exhibited previously and are thought to deserve a wider audience.

 

 

Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania, August 1, 2016 - Preparations are underway for the 42nd annual Mt. Gretna Art Show, to be held Saturday, August 20, and Sunday, August 21, 2016, on the streets and in the parks of Mt. Gretna, PA. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, rain or shine.


There are a number of new events this year, including interactive exhibits, including an exhibit by the Mt. Gretna School of Art, and performances by music students at the Hall of Philosophy. Also at the hall, there will be a Pennsylvania Chautauqua Summer Programs’ silent auction of artwork and vintage Mt. Gretna furniture from the estate of the late Pat Pinsler, a longtime Mt. Gretna resident. Lebanon Valley College’s Artist in Residence, Dan Massad, a nationally recognized artist whose works have been displayed at the Smithsonian, Metropolitan Museum and Spence Museum of Art, will make a special appearance at the college’s booth in the Hall of Philosophy between 1 and 3 p.m. both days. Love Give Live Gallery & Gifts, a nonprofit store specializing in the sale of local social enterprise and global economic development gifts, will also be set up in the hall.

There are special children’s events, with a Theatre for Young Audience Production, “Dinosaur: the Musical,” at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse, with performances at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Also the Kids’ Art Show, created with family in mind, is scheduled for both days under the direction of Melissa Kochinsky. Held at the Chautauqua Playground (Stacey’s Place), the event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Children will be selling their artwork and crafts, and there will be make-and-take art activities, as well as face painting by ARTIFACES. Student performers will provide entertainment.


Held on the historic grounds of the Pennsylvania Chautauqua, the Art Show is consistently ranked highly by artists’ trade publications.


Daily entertainment includes Trist N’ Shout, street performers who create fanciful balloons, juggle and stilt walk in and around the park area known as the “Fairy Garden,” as well as other street performers, including Jerry Brown with his popular monkey, Django.

 

 

The Art Show features a gourmet food court with outstanding local restaurants and caterers, including Urban Olive, Rachel’s Café & Creperie, Wendy Jo’s, Hess’s Barbecue Catering, What If … Hershey, The Hershey Pantry and Square One Coffee. Local restaurants, The Jigger Shop, LeSorelle Porch & Pantry, Mt. Gretna Pizzeria, Gretna Hide-A-Way and Timbers Dinner Theatre, will also be open.
           
Proceeds from the Art Show are used to support cultural programs of the Pennsylvania Chautauqua and to maintain the Chautauqua’s historic buildings and grounds. The show also contributes substantially to the Mt. Gretna Volunteer Fire Company and funds a variety of community projects throughout Mt. Gretna.


The Art Show has an admission charge of $12 for adults and is free for children under 12. Discounted two-day tickets are available for $20 if purchased in advance. Order forms are posted on the Art Show website at
www.mtgretnaarts.com. The admission fee includes parking in designated parking locations and free shuttle bus service to and from the Butler Road lot until one-half hour after show closing.

 

Volunteers from throughout the community help visitors find their way and keep things running smoothly. The Art Show is made possible by a small army of more than 200 volunteers who work throughout the year to ensure each show surpasses the previous one. Chairperson Linda Bell and volunteer Mike Bell handle the complex logistics for the show.
