The second week of October has become a premier art experience as thousands tour through the studios of the Ojai’s renowned artists, travelling at their own pace.  The OSA creates an opportunity for the public to meet the artists in intimate settings and beautiful locations while developing relationships and learning about the artists and their creations.

Ojai, California (October 7, 2013) - Thirty years ago, three nationally recognized artists were inspired to create an event for art lovers and collectors alike to share a weekend celebration of art and creativity in Ojai, California.  The Ojai Studio Artists Tour celebrates a milestone anniversary in 2013 – the 30th annual tour set for October 12-13.

The original core founding group consisting of artists Bert Collins, Gayle Childress and Marta Nelson had a vision to bring an art event to the community of Ojai.  Today, they still retain that same enthusiasm as they prepare for the 30th tour.

Ojai’s finest artists will again open their studios and share their craft with the public which also shares a passion for the arts.  The Ojai Studio Artists Tour (OSA) started with 24 artists who opened their studios with 20 more who held a joint exhibition at the Ojai Art Center.  From this initial core group, the Ojai Studio Artists group was formed.  Today, the OSA has doubled in size from its early beginnings and has maintained its integrity with each new member juried only after demonstrating the highest standards of professional excellence and achievement.

The OSA annual tour continues to grow.  The second week of October has become a premier art experience as thousands tour through the studios of the Ojai’s renowned artists, travelling at their own pace.  The OSA creates an opportunity for the public to meet the artists in intimate settings and beautiful locations while developing relationships and learning about the artists and their creations.

“It started out as a way to help the Ojai Art Center,” stated Bert Collins, artist and one of the original founders.  “When we started off, we didn’t think it would go on for 30 years, but it has taken a life of its own becoming a first-class event while supporting the arts,” she added.

Many distinguished artists have been part of the Ojai Studio Artists throughout the years including Horace Bristol, Otto & Vivika Heino and Beatrice Wood.   Their reputation alone helped to fuel the growth of the organization.

“Our success is due to how the event is structured and to the artists themselves,” stated Gayel Childress, one of the founding artists.  “Each artist works very hard to pull this tour off and they are very supportive of each other.  You can definitely feel that there is a special bond between the members of OSA,” she added.

Tour participants can drive themselves from studio to studio to meet with the artists, view the artwork and make direct purchases.  Or they can opt to join in on a docent-guided Concierge Tour to experience the tour on a deeper level.  The tour includes visits to 8-9 artists’ studios while docents provide in-depth information about each particular artist.  The cost is $100 per person or $175 per couple.  “This is a great way to gain insight into the artists’ life and into their individual artwork itself”, stated Donna Granata, artist and docent on the concierge tour.  “The docents are quite knowledgeable and provide behind-the-scenes information that helps enhance the tour,” says Gayel.

Another important part of the OSA is its scholarship program.  Initiated in 1993, proceeds from the tour tickets and raffle/auction sales plus sponsorships and private donations have enabled OSA to provide more than $125,000 in art scholarships.  Besides helping individuals, the program also provides art books for local libraries, serves as a partner with schools to aid the classroom and mentoring efforts plus supports public art projects and community programs.  The scholarships have benefitted many students including Trevore Giove who was awarded $1,200  this past spring.  “The scholarship helped me a great deal and allowed me to jumpstart my education,” noted Giove.  “I am now pursuing a degree in Graphic Design at Santa Fe University of Art & Design and I will be forever grateful for this amazing gift to help me realize my dreams,” he added.
