A Weekend of Wine, Flowers and Romance: San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and the Pacific Orchid Exposition

San Francisco, California, January 14, 2014 - Love is in the air as the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and the Pacific Orchid Exposition, both set against the romantic backdrop of San Francisco, come to Fort Mason Center this February.

Immediately following Valentine's Day, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Public Tasting (SFCWC) offers the chance to taste hundreds of award winning wines, talk directly to winemakers and sample delicious foods.

This year the Public Tasting will take place on Saturday, February 15th from 1:30-5 p.m. at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco.  It will open 30 minutes earlier than previous years.

In addition to wine, food and a wonderful day with friends and family, the competition will have several notable media personalities at the event.  There will be judges like Wilfred Wong from BevMo! and Jon Bonne, the wine critic from the San Francisco Chronicle, to help answer questions and enhance the pairing of wine and food experience.

As the first wine competition of the year, the judging portion of the SFCWC  brings together the most distinguished wine experts in the country to compare wines in multiple price ranges and varieties to determine the best of the best in each category. An elite group of individuals from media, trade, educators, restaurant and hospitality industries come together for an intensive week-long judging session.

The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition is an annual fundraiser that supports wine studies, enology, and viticulture programs for higher education institutions in California.  Left over wines from the competition is donated annually to Santa Rosa Junior College, Fresno State University, Sonoma State University, and California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo.

For over 22 years the SFCWC, formerly the Cloverdale Citrus Fair Wine Competition, has grown and redefined itself in response to the needs of wineries and consumers.  Last year the judges scrutinized over 5,500 wines from budget to exclusive categories and this year, the competition has once again broken records with the number of entries received.

Advance tickets are $65 online and $80 at the door, but the event typically sells out so guests are encourage to purchase tickets ahead of time. For tickets and additional information on the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, visit www.winejudging.com.

The next weekend, February 20-23, Fort Mason Center will open its doors to the largest orchid show in the United States, the 62nd Annual Pacific Orchid Exposition.

Themed "Orchids...And All That Jazz", the Pacific Orchid Exposition (POE) features over 150,000 orchids from around the globe, displayed in colorful and eye-popping exhibits.

The POE serves as the largest fundraiser for the non-profit San Francisco Orchid Society and it kicks off with a Gala Benefit Preview on Thursday, February 20 from 6:30-10:00 pm. The Gala Benefit features wine tasting from some of California's premiere wineries, delicious hors d'oeuvres, live music, and the first chance to purchase the best orchid selections before the event opens to the general public.

The Gala Night will also feature an lavish live auction with exciting trips such as an $8,000 cruise to Asia, provided by Azamara Club Cruises, an African Safari, provided by Ezulwini Lodges, and a wine country getaway, provided by the Sonoma Orchid Inn. Plus, there will also be a silent auction which will feature excursions, gift baskets, wine, fine art and much more.

For the first time ever, the Pacific Orchid Exposition has partnered with the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers and the Botanical Gardens at UC Berkeley and will provide each organization with $5 from all Gala Night ticket sales.

The event continues February 21-23 with the general show and plant sale. Attendees can take part in docent tours, watch horticultural demonstrations and listen to speakers lecture on a wide range of orchid related topics.

The speakers series will feature a host of orchid specialists, including authors Ron Parsons and Mary Gerritsen who have just penned a new book, "A Compendium of Miniature Orchid Species." Ron will give a special lecture on Saturday, February 22 and he and Mary will be available afterwards to sign copies of their book.

Bruce Rogers, another author and orchid expert, will speak on Sunday, February 23 and will be discussing topics from his popular book, "The Orchid Whisperer."
