Scottish Fest - a Scottish American Celtic Festival for Scots and Non-Scots, Costa Mesa, CA

Costa Mesa, California, May 25, 2016 - Scottish Fest returns for its 84th year at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa from 9am to 6pm. With approximately 20,000 in attendance the Southern California Scottish American Celtic Festival offers a variety of entertainment and performances on more than 10 stages and competition venues for both the Scottish and non-Scottish alike.

A significant part of the festival is recognizing, remembering and giving thanks to the military on Memorial Day weekend by offering free entry to active, retired and veterans of the military. In addition, the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band from Miramar, California will perform both days including their marching and rock bands. The festival also has a Salute to Veterans program daily and Memorial Service on Sunday.

There are many human interest stories surrounding the event such as the 14 year old Southern California two time World Champion Highland Dancer Erin Blair; arguably the most recorded piper in the world Eric Riggler with credits of Outlander, Titanic, Braveheart will perform with Bad Haggis; the all youth world championship pipe band from Canada will compete; the Marine Sand Piper who played his bagpipes while deployed in Ramadi, Iraq, and many more.

The festival is a family friendly event that you don’t have to be Scottish to enjoy the wide array of activities for all ages.

It’s a lot more than bagpipes with:
• big burly men and strong women throwing large objects in a feat of strength in the professional class athletic championship featuring the caber toss (telephone pole);
• a Celtic music line-up that features the favorites like Bad Haggis, Wicked Tinkers, Neil O'Neill, Sligo Rags, Highland Way, and the Ploughboys
• about 60 Celtic merchants selling a wide variety of products from kilts, to sweets, to swords and jewelry
• the Western Regional Highland Dancing Championship that is a qualifier for the U.S. National Championship
• an International Bagpipe and Drum Band Championship featuring approximately 24 competition bands and more than 400 pipers and drummers performing en masse daily
• educational opportunities with sheep herding demos, archery and a "Learn to play the bagpipes" comedic show. Children can also enjoy an area with games, inflatable jumpers and more.
• about 70 Scottish clans and organizations on hand to trace one's heritage.
• a variety of scrumptious Celtic food and drink including haggis, fish 'n chips and more. In addition to fine beers, the Whisky Tasting is one of Southern California’s finest by combining a hard to find variety of premium whiskies along with a knowledgeable and entertaining whisky master.

From the minute the festival opens at 9AM, until the minute that it closes at 6PM, everyone will have had the opportunity to truly appreciate and celebrate every aspect of the Scottish and Celtic culture at the 84th Annual Scottish Fest produced by the United Scottish Society.The charter of the non-profit United Scottish Society is to support the Scottish and Celtic traditions and culture while providing a learning opportunity and experience to the general public.
