Thurston County history comes alive with pioneer activities, period attire and music: History in the Park, Tumwater, WA

 

 

Tumwater, Washington, September 1, 2016 - The history of early Thurston County will come alive on Sunday, October 2, at Tumwater Falls Park (110 Deschutes Way SW) in Tumwater, WA. The History in the Park event, number twelve in a series called Thurston County Through the Decades, will be held from 10 am until 4 pm, and will feature historical displays, demonstrations, and hands-on activities representative of life in Thurston County during the years 1825 to 1850.

 

Among the planned activities are rope making, blacksmithing, pioneer kitchen, scrub board laundry, basketry and weaving, as well as demonstrations on cast iron cookery and fur trapping. Colorful period attire will be featured and period music will be provided by Phil and Vivian Williams, renowned fiddlers and specialists in the music of the fur trade era and the Oregon Trail. Barb's Soul Cuisine BBQ will be on hand for the hungry. River Walk Tours will be given and Stream Team will be there with information on the returning salmon.

 

The Thurston County Through the Decades series is a partnering project of the various historical associations, museums, and civic organizations in Thurston County. This event is family-friendly. Admission is free. One special note for those who have attended this fall event in previous years: There will by no cider pressing service this year.
