Vermont Quilt Festival Celebrates 40 Years of Color and Artistry, June 24 to 26, 2016

Essex Junction, Vermont,  June 10, 2016 - The Vermont Quilt Festival returns to the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction, Friday, June 24 through Sunday, June 26. Celebrating 40 years, New England’s largest and oldest quilt event delights visitors with the dazzling color and artistry in the hundreds of quilts on display. Thousands come from around the world to enjoy exhibits of new and antique quilts, lectures and classes underwritten in part by Janome, appraisal services, free gallery talks, and great shopping in the extensive Merchants Mall.

“Over the last four decades, VQF has offered some of the best quilts, both antique and new, and this year is no exception,” said Richard L. Cleveland, founder of the Festival. An exhibit of Vermont antique quilts, many from the book Plain and Fancy, highlights the variety of quilt styles of the 19th and early 20th centuries. In Life’s Work, iconic quilt artist Ruth B. McDowell curates the largest exhibit ever of her work. She explores the traditional structure of piecing as a format for her original design. Less is More showcases quilts by Gwen Marston that are a modern take on the traditional. Featuring small quilts interpreting the theme “Celebration” is the popular SewBatik Challenge exhibit. And the exhibit that always creates a buzz is the judged show featuring a stunning array of work in a wide variety of styles and techniques by quilters age 4 to 94.

Festivities begin Thursday evening, June 23 at 6:30pm, with the Awards Ceremony celebrating contest winners. Opening the show at 7:30pm is the always-festive Champagne and Chocolate Preview sponsored by Quilting Treasures of NYC, where visitors delight in being the first to view the quilts and shop the bustling Merchants Mall. The Mall, featuring more than 90 vendors, has the latest in supplies, machines, gift items and more. Tickets are $12 at the door.

Show hours are Friday and Saturday 9am to 6pm; Sunday 9am to 3pm. Daily admission is $12, children under 14 free. The appraisal service for new quilts is available Friday 9am-2pm, $70 per quilt; antique quilt appraisals are Saturday 9am to 5pm, $50 per quilt. For more information, please visit
