24th Annual Celebration of Zimbabwean Music and Dance, Monmouth, OR

 

The festival offers three days of workshops on diverse aspects of Zimbabwean culture, free afternoon concerts, an African Marketplace and ticketed evening concerts.

Oregon, Monmouth, June 1, 2015 - The 24th annual Zimbabwean Music Festival will be held on the campus of Western Oregon University, 345 Monmouth Ave. N., Monmouth, OR, on August 13-16, 2015. This “everyone-can-participate” festival offers three days of workshops, many of them for children and teens. Activities include fifteen hours of free afternoon concerts, an African Marketplace and ticketed evening concerts. Valuing education as well as performance, Zimfest attracts Zimbabwean music and culture experts from around the world to teach festival participants. Workshops are available on everything from basic Shona drumming to traditional dance to the ancient sounds of mbira and the irresistible, effervescent marimba.

 

Continuing Education clock hours are offered for classroom teachers, a sign of Zimfest’s commitment to a long-lasting positive impact on the Northwest music community. Zimfest 2015 will celebrate the theme “Enduring Rhythms - Gathering in Harmony.” Experience the power of African music and dance to bring people together in a full three and a half days of Zimbabwean-inflected music, dance, song, culture and fun.
 
Featured Zimbabwean Performers: Master mbira players Patience Munjeri and Vitalis Botsa; marimba specialists Patience Musandirire and Kurai Blessings Mubaiwa; the electric duo Mbira Spirit; dancer Rujeko Dumbutshena and guitarist extraordinaire Zivanai Masango.
 
Festival registration and housing check-in is open noon - 5 PM Thursday, August 13; 8:30 AM - 6 PM Friday and Saturday; Sunday registration is 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM.


Concert tickets are $18 in advance; workshops $15 per hour. Tickets are available online or at the door; music starts at 7:30 on Thursday through Sunday nights. Visit
